Years ago, when we were first establishing ourselves as fiberglass pool installers, it could feel as if we were trying to talk homeowners into giving them a try. They weren’t technically new products, with fiberglass pool installation having been around for decades, but few in our area of northeastern Massachusetts had actually seen them. Customers were understandably skeptical.

Even though there were obvious benefits to using space-age materials in swimming pools, nearly everyone we met had seen hundreds of concrete or gunite pools. A few might have enjoyed above-ground liner pools in the past. But fiberglass was new and different. It took a lot of explanation.

In the past few years, that dynamic has shifted pretty considerably. Now we have several homeowners reach out to us each week looking for fiberglass pool installation. Many of them got the ideas from friends and neighbors who proudly showed off their own swimming pools. Some customers are coming to us already informed about styles, brands, and dimensions.

Some of this is probably happening because our own company has grown – years of positive reviews have added up to the point that people are seeking us out. But I don’t think that explains everything. My sense of the market is that fiberglass pools are becoming the default choice, rather than something different.

In today’s post, I want to share the five reasons I think we are seeing this trend. If you’re thinking about adding a swimming pool to your property this year, they might give you a handful of ideas to consider. Let’s start with the first thing that draws customers in…

#1 Fiberglass Pools Offer Fast Planning and Installation

Depending on where you live and what the local regulations are like, it can take a while to get permission to put a swimming pool in your backyard. But once that process is over, you could have a fiberglass pool installation completed in a matter of weeks. A concrete pool, on the other hand, could take months (or longer).

Ultimately, you shouldn’t base any landscaping decisions purely on time and convenience. But at the same time, it’s much more satisfying to pay for a pool and enjoy it quickly. Many of our customers cite this as a reason to go with fiberglass.

#2 Fiberglass Pools Come With Special Color and Design Choices

Concrete swimming pools generally come in a mixture of drab or expected colors. Fiberglass models, on the other hand, can offer multiple choices that reflect the design and styling of a property. For example, our current range includes nearly a dozen options – including some lighter and darker choices, as well as speckled finishes.

That versatility matters when you’re trying to achieve a certain type of look. It’s also helpful when you want to keep a consistent style throughout your patio, stonework, furniture, and other aesthetic elements.

#3 Fiberglass Pools Have Lower Maintenance Needs

This is the one advantage of fiberglass pools that customers tend to appreciate the most after they have been installed. Because the products are built using strong, light, space-age materials with a gel coating, they don’t require so much in the way of cleaning and chemicals. You can simply install the pool and enjoy it. If you haven’t experienced the difference for yourself, then ask someone who has a concrete swimming pool whether this is a big deal or not.

Having a fiberglass swimming pool doesn’t just give you time back, either. All the various treatments involved in keeping a concrete pool fresh carry recurring costs. These largely disappear when you’re working with more durable materials.

#4 Fiberglass Pools Give Extra Protection Against Kids and Pets

Let’s take the topic of durability a bit further. There are two types of “swimming pool users” who tend to generate more repairs than others: kids and pets. Dogs, specifically, can find themselves scratching at liners or doing things that require more chemical treatments. Kids, on the other hand, can fill pools with rocks and toys that create scratches or tear liners.

These issues are virtually unheard of with fiberglass pool installation. The material is just too strong. It’s the same stuff they make luxury yachts and racing boats out of, so it can stand up to the punishment your children and furry friends can dish out.

#5 Fiberglass Pools Carry Lower Risks of Replacement

Even aside from the damages you get by using swimming pools, you can wear out concrete and other traditional materials just having them in the ground. That’s especially true in New England, known for its hot, humid summers and long, punishing winters. The same weather patterns that put so many potholes in our roads can cause concrete to chip and crack.

Once again, fiberglass is the answer. With a lifetime structural warranty, you don’t have to worry that your product is going to get damaged with seasonal heating and cooling. That’s not just marketing hype, either; these pools have been used in places like Canada and Alaska for many years. You can feel confident they’ll make it through a Massachusetts winter.
