Often, when new customers come to us looking for a fiberglass pool installer they warn us that they’ll have lots of questions. What they don’t often realize is just how common that is. In fact, they should be asking anything and everything. We’ve installed dozens of fiberglass swimming pools. They’ll likely be going through the process for the first time.
Despite that reality, they are sometimes embarrassed to ask about the basics. And we know that for every homeowner we meet there are probably dozens more who never get the chance to sit with us face-to-face. With that in mind, I want to use today’s post to answer some of the most frequent questions I field about fiberglass pool installation.
Here are the seven queries that come up most often, along with some simple and straightforward answers.
Fiberglass pools are made from fiberglass, which is a synthetic plastic made from glass (hence the name). You probably guessed that already, but what you need to know is that it’s stronger than metal and concrete, isn’t corrosive, and can be molded into many different shapes and finishes.
The fiberglass used in our pools comes from a company that manufactures the material for high-end sailing yachts. That’s how you know it’s both durable and aesthetically pleasing.
There are lots of reasons you might choose to have a fiberglass pool installed on your property. Many homeowners think they look better than traditional concrete pools. They are more durable and require less upkeep, meaning you can spend more time enjoying them and less time maintaining them. And, they hold more of their value over the long run.
Also, it’s worth noting that fiberglass pools can be installed within a matter of weeks, which is something our customers tend to love.
Because fiberglass pools can appear to be thinner or more brittle than traditional in-ground swimming pools, many new customers worry that they won’t last, or will be susceptible to damage. In reality, it’s just the opposite. Fiberglass pools are made from incredibly strong materials and very rarely have problems.
The one caveat here is that any swimming pool – fiberglass or concrete – needs to be installed with care. That means measuring, excavating, and placing pieces with care. You’ll want to ensure your patio renovation company has the right skills and experience. Otherwise you could run into issues very quickly.
Yes and no. Fiberglass pools sometimes carry higher upfront cost than other pools in the same size range. However, they also require less maintenance, last longer, and permit you to use saltwater, which requires fewer chemical treatments.
It’s easy to lose track of those bigger-picture savings when you are simply looking at different quotes from fiberglass pool installers. However, our customers nearly always find that choosing a fiberglass pool becomes the less expensive choice over time when all the factors are considered. And, they love that they can increase the value of their property with such a durable upgrade.
Fiberglass pools are relatively quick to install. Whereas putting a traditional concrete pool into someone’s backyard might require us to dig and perform construction for a matter of months – effectively closing off a portion of the property for an entire season – a fiberglass pool can be installed in weeks. They are manufactured ahead of time, so much of the prep work can be done before installation begins.
This is one of those hidden benefits of the product that customers love. While getting a swimming pool installed quickly might not be the most important consideration, it can be exciting to have your new pool ready for a specific event like a party or family visit.
As with all areas of patio design, there are three things you should look for when choosing a fiberglass pool installer:
You shouldn’t move forward with your project until you find a company that checks all these boxes. You should be comfortable in your belief that they are professional and committed to your satisfaction. And, you should understand any fees, terms, and timelines that have been presented.
Usually, if a customer doesn’t want a fiberglass pool it’s because their plans call for something that is bigger or deeper than we are able to secure from a quality supplier. Or, in some cases they may be looking for a custom design that just isn’t available from a fiberglass pool manufacturer. We do also come across homeowners who don’t like the increased upfront costs associated with fiberglass pools.
These situations are rare, though, and you should talk to your patio renovation company about specifics before making a decision one way or the other.
