Recently, I got the chance to meet with a homeowner who was very excited about making some changes to her property. Before we could even get to the point of issuing a proposal, though, she started to have some second thoughts. Was this really the right time, she wondered, to spend money on a patio contractor when the economy felt uncertain?  And should she really make changes with cooler weather around the corner?

I told her I can’t predict the future or make decisions for her, but thought this might be the perfect time to hire a patio contractor.

Before I explain why, let me get a couple of caveats out of the way. The first one has to do with the changing of the seasons. While it’s true that the colder months hit New England particularly hard, our team works year-round. And, much of what we do (especially with hot tubs, saunas, outdoor fireplaces, etc.) can make it a lot more enjoyable to be at home when it’s cold.

The second bit of fine print speaks to what (I suspect) was her real worry: inflation and the economy. Obviously, everyone’s circumstances are different. However, most of the homeowners we meet with aren’t really in a bad spot or tight for money; they are just worried about the future. That’s completely reasonable, but it’s unlikely that making some improvements around their backyard is going to make a substantial difference. In fact, it could end up being a great decision at just the right time.

To understand why, there are a few things you have to keep in mind…

Your Home Isn’t on a Subscription

If things do start to turn in the economy, there are plenty of places you can cut back and save money. You might go out to fewer dinners, put off that skiing trip you had planned, or hold onto your used car for another year. The one thing you’re probably not going to do is stop living in your house.

This was a lesson many people learned during the pandemic. You can pull back and lower expenses in a number of ways, but having a comfortable place to live is always worth it. Your property is the place where you wake up in the morning, spend time with your friends and family, and go to bed at night.

To put this another way, you can cancel plans and subscriptions, but your house should be a place where you can feel completely relaxed. That’s still (and maybe especially) true when you’re saving money in other places.

A Patio Contractor Works on Shorter Waiting Times

Everyone thinks about renovating their patio when the economy is great and the sun is out. That’s why we have to remind people that the best and most reliable patio contractor teams, the ones with decades of experience, can have long waiting times.

Guess what? When others are hesitant to commit to a patio renovation project you can get faster service and even more one-on-one attention from our designers and specialists. It’s possible more crews can be devoted to your property if they aren’t working elsewhere. You might even be able to get better pricing or faster delivery on the materials for your job.

Those details make this a really great time to invest in your home if you have the savings and desire.

The Holidays are Right Around the Corner

One thing we hear every Autumn, regardless of what’s happening with the weather or the economy, is that homeowners wish they would have done a better job of planning ahead. If you’re going to have family or friends coming by for the holidays this might be your best chance to spruce up your home and property.

There are a lot of things we love about our work. One of the little joys is that we can help our customers to enjoy their homes more. That’s even better when they are entertaining, because it means warm memories that can last a lifetime.

If you were thinking about having some landscaping work done this Fall ahead of the holiday season, why not take a look and see how we can help? It doesn’t take long, and might turn out to be a decision you appreciate more over the next few months.

It’s Always Smart to Spend on Your Home

I’ve saved this point for last because I like homeowners to call us because they have a dream for what their property can become. I want them to enjoy long summer days by the pool, autumn evenings sipping wine by an outdoor fireplace, and vacation days that don’t require any travel whatsoever.

But when you put those notions aside, it’s rational to think that investing in your own property is one of the smartest financial decisions you can make. Not only does it allow you to save money on travel, dinners out, etc. (because you’re enjoying your home instead of escaping it), but it also increases equity and curb appeal.

So, if you’re on the fence about whether or not to call a patio contracting team, just remember it’s a good way to secure your long-term financial future while also enjoying your home a little bit more today.
