There are probably parts of the world where you can work as a fiberglass pool installer all year round. I can tell you from experience that New England isn’t one of them.
The reasons for this are pretty obvious. The harsh Massachusetts winters make it unpleasant to work outdoors. Most customers aren’t looking to enjoy a swim when things are icy. And most importantly, any digging or excavation we do when the ground is frozen would be apt to shift when things get warmer. Add them all together and it just isn’t a great time to put a pool in the ground.
That doesn’t mean our fiberglass pool installation business grinds to a halt between Thanksgiving and the spring thaw, however. In fact, a lot of our most important work gets done during the so-called “slow season.”
Recently, some curious customers have asked how we keep ourselves busy when the days are short and the temperatures are lower. I thought I would share some insights because they may satisfy your curiosity. Plus, knowing what a leading Massachusetts fiberglass pool installation company does in the off-season can help you to choose the right team for your own project.
So, what have we been up to since the holidays?
Our Patio Installers Can Help With Snow Removal Projects
Let’s start with the obvious answer, and the one you probably expect. Although we focus on patio renovation and fiberglass pool installation in the warmer months, we do offer snow removal in the winter.
Depending on the year, and the weather, we could find ourselves clearing commercial areas, retail spaces, and large-scale residential properties nearly continuously from December through March. This tends to match up almost perfectly with the times when it doesn’t make sense to put pools into the ground.
What’s interesting about this type of switch, though, is that it doesn’t actually take up most of the winter. It’s what people who aren’t in the business tend to assume we are busy with, but the reality is we still have a lot to do that’s centered on pools.
That brings me to our most important job at this time of year.
We are Pricing and Planning Pools for the Coming Spring
Our best customers tend to be the ones who plan ahead. They don’t wait for warm summer days to decide they’d like to have a swim; they think about what having a pool would mean for their lifestyle and property and then meet with us well before the weather turns.
This kind of approach can pay off in several ways. For one, it allows us to survey a property, develop a budget, and put together an installation plan while things are slow. It gives us extra time to secure permits and materials. And best of all, it puts those customers at the front of the line when we are scheduling work crews.
Even under the best of conditions, it’s going to take several weeks to install a fiberglass pool. All of that goes easier and faster when everything has been outlined and agreed during the quieter months.
We Meet With Designers and Manufacturers to See What’s New
The fiberglass pool industry is an interesting one. On the one hand, the materials themselves could be considered space-age miracles. But on the other hand, the specific models that are produced don’t usually change a great deal from one season to the next.
Still, manufacturers come out with new pools all the time. Sometimes they change shapes and colors. On other occasions, there might be new materials that are smoother, glossier, or longer-lasting. During the winter months we can meet with our suppliers to see what they have on offer, talk about new trends, and even test out different surfaces for ourselves.
Because we don’t want to put anything on your property that we wouldn’t have on ours, it’s important for us to ask the right questions and develop these relationships. That’s hard to do when we are busy installing pools throughout the spring, summer, and fall. The colder months give us a perfect chance to catch up on all kinds of training and industry knowledge.
We Plan Ahead for Future Fiberglass Pool Installations
New England has had a number of prevalent sports dynasties in recent years. Although the players and circumstances have been different, all of them have been known for their relentless pursuit of improvement during the off-season.
While our work might not be as glamorous, we also believe in the idea of getting better and better over time. That’s why all of our team, and especially the project managers, take advantage of slower calendar periods to review and reflect. Specifically, we’ve been looking back to see how we performed in 2025 and been thinking about ways to get even better in the coming months.
There is always something new we can add to our set of specialties, or another way we can pass on value to our customers. By looking both backwards and forwards we can take what we’ve learned and do even better work for the homeowners we serve. That attitude has carried us through 20+ years of growth and success so far, so I can’t see why we would abandon it now.
Are You Thinking of a New Fiberglass Pool for 2026?
Ask the average homeowner: “what do you think a fiberglass pool installer near me is doing during the winter?” and they’ll assume we’re closed, or maybe on vacation. The reality, though, is that even though installations have slowed down there are always tasks to keep us busy.
That’s probably a good thing for everyone involved. For us, it means we can keep our focus where it should be. For you, it means an easy way to separate the best from the rest.
If you’re thinking about adding a pool to your property in 2026, consider making a few calls and seeing which companies are available to meet with you. The ones with experience – like the team at Stefano’s – will be ready to talk with you no matter what the thermometer says.
